Full description

Old Bridwell Farm marked comprising ranges of buildings around two adjoining yards. Immediately south is a walled garden and just to the east the site of a chapel.

Old Bridwell is documented in 1280, 1288, 1298, 1333 and 1499.

Bridwell was in the hands of the Clarke family from 1610 (when it was leased to Richard Clarke) to 1981, when the 18th century Bridwell House was sold. The family history has been studied by Hughes and family papers have been deposited with the Devon Heritage Centre. Old Bridwell is depicted on a plan of 1779.

Bridwell is recorded as a place name in 1280 and presumably Old Bridwell was the centre of the estate until Bridwell House was built in 1779. None of the buildings at Old Bridwell are listed but the outbuildings include late medieval structures and the current farmhouse may be 17th century or earlier.
