Full description

Timms, S., 1981, Old Bridwell (Personal Comment). SDV366027.

Site visit 14th April 1981. An L-shaped building now used for storage. The south range, which is incorporated into the north side of the C18 walled garden, is cob and thatch and was originally single storey in part. It contains three pairs of jointed crucks, some with smoke blackening. Some moulded mullion windows. The interior has beams with stops and chamfers and a shoulder-headed doorway. The large fireplace with three ovens at the east end has early ?C17 bricks. The south wall was rebuilt in brick in the late C18. The range which runs north from west end of south range is later. It is two and a half storeys, cob and thatch with some mullion windows and a segmental headed doorway on east side. The roof structure is plain and is carried over the roof of the south range. There is an external stone stair on the east side. To the north is a later single-storey open-fronted shed. There are proposals to convert/restore this building to residential use.

Timms, S., 1981, Old Bridwell, Plan (Worksheet). SDV43490.

Site visit 14th April 1981. L-shaped range to the south of the farmhouse. The south range is of cob and thatch with three pairs of jointed crucks and a smoke blackened roof. There ware some moulded mullion windows. Inside there are two beams with stops and chamfers and an early doorway with mason's mitres. A large fireplace has been inserted in the east end with a stopped and chamfered lintel. There are three ovens in the back and side of the fireplace. The south wall has been rebuilt, possibly in the late 18th century when it would have been a garden house overlooking the walled garden to the south.
The west range is is of cob and thatch, with windows with moulded mullions in the north gable end. It is of two storeys, plus an attic. The low doorway on the east side has a segmental head and mason's mitres. Access to the first floor is by an external stone stairway on the east side. There is an interior staircase from the second floor into the roof. The roof structure shows this range to postdate the south range.

Department of Environment, 1982, Addition/alteration to the Provisional List for District of Mid Devon (former Tiverton RD) (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV43539.

Wooden mullion windows with leaded panes. Interior has stepped chamfer ciling beams and an early doorframe with masonic mitres.
The north-west wing circa C17 or earlier. Cob and stone rubble with thatched roof with gabled end. Two storeys and attic. Old moulded wooden mullion windows and low doorway with old boarded door. External stone stairs to first floor doorway.
Adjoining north an open-sided implement shed with slate roof supported on square stone piers. Adjoining west of cottage a cob wall on stone plinth with slate coping.

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1982, Devon. Uffculme: Bridwell, Plan (Report - non-specific). SDV43504.

An L-shaped house possibly dated to the 15th or 16th century. It may have been part of a long house but no longer retains its lower end (if indeed it ever had one). Constructed of cob, rubble and brick. It comprises a southern range running east-west and a north wing. The interpretation of the building is far from clear.
The southern range comprises two cells, the eastern one heated in its east gable, the western one unheated. Entrance is at present into the east gable end, beside a substantial brick stack. Traces of smoke blackening in the roof, which has a jointed cruck, suggests that the stack has been inserted. The south wall has been rebuilt in the 18th or early 19th century.
The north wing is of later date but may have replaced an earlier structure. It is unheated and its function is uncertain.
See report for further details.
