HER Number:MDV21098
Name:Possible natural outcrops, northwest of Bradley Barton, Newton Abbot

Summary

An alignment of four earthworks along a plateau to the northwest of Bradley Barton, Newton Abbot, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. They partly correspond with outcrops of igneous rock and are therefore interpreted as being more likely of natural origin.

Sub-oval shaped earthworks are visible.

Site visit 24th July 1983. Four possible earthworks visible on limestone ridge running west from Bradley Farm, in field of barley. They could be plough-damaged prehistoric barrows yet their status is suspect.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor (Cartographic). SDV361470.

Sub-oval shaped earthworks are visible.

Four mounds visible on modern aerial photographs running east from Chercombe Bridge Road.

Earthworks of four sub-oval shaped mound like features, between 15m to 23m long, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, on a plateau to the northwest of Bradley Barton, Newton Abbot. The earthworks have been previously interpreted as possible prehistoric barrows, although this seems unlikely given their natural -like form and coincidence with a series of outcrops of igneous rock shown in this location on the British Geological Survey 1:50000 scale digital geology map.
