A fulling mill was mentioned at 'upper fleare' in 1613, three grist mills in 'fleer' in 1624, two grist mills in 'lower fleare' in 1651 and a fulling mill and grist mills at 'higher flear mills' in 1663. In 1795 'flear mills' was described as consisting of a farmhouse and '150 acres of land meadow and orchard', with a stable and pigsties as well as 'water grist and corn mills'. In 1878 the mill machinery, stones and waterwheel were complete but a few years later it was 'disused' (bodman).
