A series of earthworks is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1969 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, within Staplehill Copse, Iisington and Newton Abbot. The visible earthworks occupy an area of circa 12.7 hectares and are aligned northeast to southwest along the interface between the steep northeast facing slopes of Tavy Formation Slate and the more moderate slopes of Bovey Formation Sand, Silt and Clay. The earthworks are characterised by sinuous, incised channels, up to 15m wide, which are interspersed with numerous irregularly shaped pit and banked features. More substantial banks are visible along the northern edge of the main ditched channel at circa SX82497389. On the gentler slopes to the northeast are visible a series of parallel linear banks up to 5m wide which are in places flanked by narrow linear and sinuous ditches. The banks and ditches partly correspond with earthworks shown in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map of the late 19th century, as well as with earthworks labelled as ‘Sand Pit’ (MDV52004 & MDV21191). The earthworks are interpreted as the water channels, cuttings and associated spoil heaps of a possible medieval or post-medieval tin streamworks which bear a number of similarities with other better studied tin working sites recorded in the area, such as at Gavrick Copse and Pitt’s Plantation (MDV61846). Further investigation is highly recommended to help establish more fully the nature and extent of the earthworks.
