Bovey heathfield coal pits have been worked for several years (1794-6) and are of considerable service to a pottery close by. Coal pits are c 24.4m deep, often filled with water. This removed by an engine with overshot wheel which works levers with rods and buckets (maton, 1796, in chope).

Lignite mine associated with bovey pottery. In 1775 debts of the pottery were being offset by profits from the mine (see dro mining 25). A map of 1837 shows an engine house, whim and lime kilns. The works were serviced by a series of leats. Waterwheels installed by honeychurch (leaseholder of bovey pottery 1804 - c.1834) (weddell + westcott).
