Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Field 1143, which runs across the top of the hill to the south of Newbuildings, is named as Bickon Down on the Sandford Tithe Apportionment.

Beacon Cross on a prominent hill to the north-west of Ruxford may be identified with weardsetl (watch-seat) mentioned in a grant of land at Sandford.

Appendix A. No. 17a: Hundred of Crediton. Weardsetl. Placenames in Devon (p411) gives this from Birch's Saxon Charters as meaning the Watch Seat. Greenwood's map of Devon, 1826, shows Beacon Hill. John Ogilby shows a beacon to the east of New Buildings (Map 68) but refers to it as 'Tiverton Beacon'.
