HER Number:MDV21500
Name:Monkleigh Priory

Summary

There does not appear to have been a priory at Monkleigh. A document of 1544 which had been catalogued as referring to Monkleigh Priory infact refers to Monkleigh Manor which had belonged to Montacute Priory in Somerset. An early-mid 19th century house to the south of the churchyard called The Chantry probably references a medieval chantry attached to the parish church which was suppressed by Edward VI in the mid 16th century.

Devon County Council, 1986 - 1987, Devon Religious Houses Survey (Un-published). SDV347681.

Monkleigh Priory was one of sixty plus religious houses investigated as part of the Devon Religious Houses Survey, a Devon County Council Rescue Project. The aims of the survey were to identify how much remains of the site and to consider how any surviving remains could be conserved for the future. The work comprised a rapid assessment of the site, summarising the present state of knowledge, followed by a more detailed survey in order to define the extent of the religious house and its plan, identify the earthwork and standing remains and assess its post-dissolution history.
In the case of Monkleigh Priory it was quickly established that a document catalogued as referring to Monkleigh Priory in fact referred to Monkleigh Manor. See report entry.
