Name:Barrow ‘B’ west of East Down Cross

Summary

Prehistoric bowl barrow 'B', the most westerly of a small group of three barrows to the west of East Down Cross, part of a wider barrow cemetery on Berry Down. The barrow is depicted as a mound on Ordnance Survey maps from the the late 19th century onwards and is visible as an earthwork mound and soilmark on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards.

Department for Culture, Media and Sport, 2000, Three Bowl Barrows 470 metres south-west of Berry Down Cross, forming part of a Round Barrow Cemetery on Berry Down (Schedule Document). SDV345986.

This monument, which falls into three separate areas of protection includes three bowl barrows situated on a prominent upland ridge known as Berry Down, overlooking the valley of a tributary to the River Yeo. These three barrows form part of a round barrow cemetery, of which seven barrows survive in all. The other barrows in the area which form part of the round barrow cemetery are the subject of separate schedulings.The western barrow (02) is a circular mound 29.3 metres in diameter, 0.8 metres high and with a buried quarry ditch approximately 3 metres wide. Round barrow cemeteries date to the Bronze Age (circa 2000-700 BC). Other details: Monument 34251.

A group of three Bronze Age barrows, two of which were probably excavated in 1883 and Bronze Age cremation burials found. The western barrow 'B' is 29.3 metres by 0.8 metres and relatively undamaged by ploughing. Other details: Barrow 'B'.

A probable bowl barrow of Bronze Age is visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards as a low earthwork and an irregularly shaped `soilmark on Berry Down. The clearly visible soilmark measures approximately 29 metres in across at its widest point. It remains visible as a faint soilmark on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in May 2007.
