Summary

Beacon hill, chardstock. Ogilby's map shows a drawing of a pole with ladder rungs, supported by struts and having a fire basket on an arm to one side. It lies west of the junction of the chard road with that to chardstock (os citing ogilby) (osa st20se21).

Beacon hill, chardstock. Ogilby's map shows a drawing of a pole with ladder rungs, supported by struts and having a fire basket on an arm to one side. It lies west of the junction of the chard road with that to chardstock (os citing ogilby) (osa st20se21).

Os cite davidson's description of the discovery of a hole 4ft deep and 2ft diameter, revetted with flint stones, on beacon hill in the 1830's. At the bottom was a stone with a hollow centre like a quern. Os suggest this could be the foundation of the pole beacon, or possibly a post mill (osa st20se23).

No site visit. A fire basket beacon on a pole is shown as a sketch on Ogilby's map of 1675. No visible remains of this features were recorded during the Blackdown Hills Survey, however, in 1992. Not recommended for scheduling.
