Market and fair granted to Roger Fitz Paine in 1248. Named as a borough in 1499.

Granted borough status in 1248. From the 14th century the village held a weekly market, two markets yearly held in September and November, and a small annual cattle fair on the 24th June. The 1542 Lay Subsidy valued the community at nine pounds six shillings and two pernce.
