Full description

Timms, S., 07/02/1982, Land Behind 39-40 Newport Street (Personal Comment). SDV351413.

Material collected over a considerable period of time with a metal detector. The land appears to fall within the medieval burgage plots and the proposed Newport development site.

Powder measures dated 1620-50 and musket balls recovered from this area (Field B) during fieldwork in advance of the Newport link road suggest that the field saw use during the Civil War. Other finds included pottery, coins including a Charles I silver Scottish 20 pence piece and a copper James I farthing, a lead seal and other metal objects of bronze, pewter and lead. Quantities of small finds dating to the 17th century and earlier have been recovered from land behind 39-40 Newport Street.
