Summary
Radway manor, no 36, or lower radway.17th century. Ancient seat of stewards of bishops of exeter, lords of the manor from 1044-1549. L-shaped, two storeyed. Roughcast over red stone. Slate roof. External chimneys. Devon porch in centre with room above. Porch gable slightly jettied and has stone finial of earlier date. Iron railings. Ancient door. Interior stairs have massive square newels and turned balusters. Ceiling on ground floor has circular design of moulded ribs, probably late 17th century (doe). Building of stone, two storeys, built probably in early 17th century, as three-room range with off centre porch leading into through passage behind hall chimney; stair turret and rear wing with new parlour added in early 18th century; further alterations in 19th century (rchm).
