An irregularly shaped pit at least 22m by 50m across is visible on aerial photographs on 1946 onwards as an earthwork, surrounded by mounds from 10m to 45m across.
The visible earthworks correspond with pits and mounds depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map and labelled as Ball Quarry (Disused).
The earthworks correspond with a pond depicted on the Tithe Map for Modbury, within plot 596, listed in the apportionments as ‘Waste’.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of a quarry that probably ceased to be worked prior to the 1840s.
The earthworks remain clearly identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
