Farmhouse probably early 16th century; much altered. Rubble walls partly plastered, with thatch and slate roofing. Casements and some wood mullioned windows.

Site visit 11th August 1973. There is no evidence of anything earlier that the late 16th century but it possible that the house may have been extended downhill from an earlier building, the site of which is now occupied by a later building at the uphill end. The 16th-17th century downhill range with its fireplace and remains of stud and panel screen appears to be an original arrangement. The roof with its jointed crucks shows no evidence of smoke-blackening. The presence of a 16th century or earlier farmbuilding (the cider press) with its slit windows is a remarkable feature, which one would ascribe to a longhouse were it near Dartmoor. It may in fact be a type of 'laithe house' which combines a dwelling house and barn, very unusual in Devon.

Higher Bruckland Farmhouse. Circa C16 plastered stone rubble house. Thatched roof with gabled ends. Two storeys. Long five window range. Three light casements, and in north gable end a four light chamfered wooden mullion window. Late C19 stone rubble gabled wing to left hand. Stone stack at front partly concealed by this wing. Rebuilt brick stack at ridge. Interior: heavy stopped chamfer ceiling beams. Fireplace with chamfered stone jambs and stopped chamfer timber lintel. Jointed cruck trusses are visible in first floor rooms.
