Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Railway marked as the Ilfracombe Branch of the London and South Western Railway (L. & S.W.R.).

The Act for the Barnstaple and Ilfracombe Railway was passed on 4th July 1870 and the line opened on 20th July 1874. Construction necessitated heavy engineering works with tunelling and almost continuous embankments and cuttings. The transportation of goods ceased on 7th September 1964 and the line finally closed on 5th October 1970.
