Summary

The sidmouth railway. A scheme was first launched in 1862 but it was abandoned after the expenditure of £7,000 and after some of the railway's earthworks had been built. It was revived in 1871 and opened 6/7/1874. The line's rail traffic was never heavy but remained steady until the lines closure on 6/3/1967 for passengers and may 1967 for goods. The local company remained independent until 1923 (thomas).
