HER Number:MDV22774
Name:Oval enclosure south-west of Legis Tor, Sheepstor

Summary

An irregular rectangular enclosure of 24m by 14m to the north of a hut settlement enclosure (MDV3979) to which it is attached by a 25m-long ruinous stone wall. The enclosure is located within a dense clitter stream and may have been an attempt to create a clearing within it. However, this was probably not achieved and the random nature of the walls suggests they were never completed. Surveyed in March 2022.

(22/02/1993) Small oval enclosure forming part of an extensive prehistoric settlement. The enclosure measures internally 25m east-west by 15m north-south and is defined by a rubble wall 1.2m wide and up to 0.6m high.
A length of boundary wall leading from the western edge of this enclosure leads to the nearby agglomerate enclosure. This connecting wall would appear to be later in date than the agglomerate enclosure and this might suggest that the oval enclosure also post-dates this feature, though there is no definite visible evidence to support this hypothesis.
