Yealmpton parish church. St. Bartholomew. Earliest mention of the church in a charter c.1225. Nothing is probably left of the old building. Restored in 1849-52 (warner).


REICHEL, 1928-1938, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV171.

A church at yealmpton existed long before the conquest and probably before the creation of the diocese of crediton in 909 (reichel, 1928-1938).

Domesday book makes reference in 1086 to "the priests of the township" of elintona (yealmpton). The geldroll refers to "st. Mary of yealmpton" (page).

Church almost completely rebuilt in 1850. Some 17th century memorials and brasses to families of pollexfen and coplestone saved and re-erected. Descriptions of same. Account of the long wrangle between these two families over seating priorities in the church (welch).

Church of st. Bartholomew. Rebuilt in 1850 by william butterfield. Tower of 1915. Coursed stone and ashlar, with freestone dressings. Slate roofs. Decorated style. Comprising:- nave, chancel, north and south aisles, north and south transepts, south porch and later west tower. Decorated windows with rectilinear, intersecting and foiled tracery. Buttresses with set-offs.1915 west tower in three stages with pinnacles and battlements. Unremarkable exterior. See doe list for full details (doe).

There is said to have been a parochial chapel at yealmpton at the time of the domesday book (reichel, 1898).
