The wall heights vary between 1.0 metre and 2.4 metres high (0.5 metres thick). The doorway is in the north-west end of the building. Slope from the ore shute retaining wall into the woods constructed recently from clearance debris.
At the time of the survey, the gunpowder hut was overgrown with vegetation and the floors could not be seen. Drawing included showing the remains of the building (fig 137) and image of the current vegetation levels (fig 135).
Clive Meaton, 2023, Gawton Mine, Devon- Costed and Prioritised Proposals for Capital Works for the Conservation and Management of Gawton Mine Scheduled Monument (Redacted Costs Version), 38 (Report - Survey). SDV366131.
The building was illustrated on the 1864 Bedford Estates map and 1882 Ordnance Survey map. In 2006, the internal dimensions were recorded as 3 metres wide by 4 metres long, with side walls surviving up to 2 metres high, the south wall to 3 metres high and the north wall to 1 metre high. The west side wall contained the doorway.
The building was assessed to be of archaeological and historical interest. It was recommended that the interior should be cleared of debris with any trees growing from the walls removed, and thereafter the masonry should be repointed with lime mortar, and the walls capped to prevent water ingress. Bedford Mine Magazine was located beyond the Site boundary, so was not surveyed. Other details: Site No. 5.
