Earthworks of an irregularly shaped bank and sub-oval pit are visible.

Buck, C., 2010, George & Charlotte Mine, Morwell, Devon: Archaeological Assessment, 41 (Report - Assessment). SDV345606.

The Bedford Estates survey map shows the site of the shaft within its surrounding spoil mound, and also the route of the flat rods from the large water wheel and the angle bob pit on the western side, which transferred the horizontal motion of the flat rod to a vertical motion in order to pump the deep workings to adit level. By the mid 1860s this shaft appears to have been quite important to the mine, as the main pumping shaft to drain the deep working levels as they extended eastwards, with a strong likelihood that it was also used to wind up ore using a small steam engine. The site was not surveyed as it is located in a privately owned field, however it can be seen that the shaft has a large circular spoil mound . Other details: Figures 5, 7-10, 18: site 30.

NERC, 2013, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) Tellus: Tamar Aerial Survey project area, LIDAR Tellus LAST RETURN 01-JUL-2013 to 31-AUG-2013 (Cartographic). SDV363955.

An irregularly shaped bank is visible as an earthwork.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology Area 1 (AI&M project) (Interpretation). SDV363945.

Earthworks of a n irregularly shaped bank, circa 35 metres long by 30 metres wide, surrounding a sub-oval pit, circa 20 metres long, are visible on digital 1940’s RAF aerial photographs and visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2010 and 2013.
The bank partly corresponds with an earthwork shown in this location on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map.
The earthworks are interpreted as a possible shaft and spoil heap associated with early to mid- 19th century mining. The workings here had probably passed out of use by the late-19th century. The extent of the workings in this location is also defined by an oval enclosure labelled as ‘Shaft’ on the 2021 Ordnance Survey MasterMap.
The earthworks correspond with a banked feature which has been previously transcribed by the Tamar Valley NMP survey. Further details from the survey database, including aerial photograph references and interpretive text, are awaiting accessioning.

Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.

The extent of the earthworks is defined by an oval enclosure which is labelled as ‘Shaft’.
