Callisham is identified by the Ordnance Survey as the site of a manor house and was presumably one of the five Domesday manors called Meavy. However, it presents something of a problem in that the earliest record traced of its name is in 1486 (see Place Names of Devon). For several centuries the property was owned by the descendants of Sir Francis Drake (see Milles' Questionnaire: Meavy parish; White 1850, 740).
