Summary

Two probably mid 18th century houses, possibly originally with shops below. Apparently built as a pair, the left hand building refenestrated in the circa 1830s. Now in use as a supermarket with accommodation over. Features of interest may survive on the upper floors.

Full description

Department of Environment, 1972, Urban District of Crediton, 13 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV39769.

19 and 20, high street. Eighteenth century altered, 2 storey, 4 windows, brick, painted. (Number 19 recessed sash windows now without glazing bars). Number 20, flush frame sash windows with glazing bars remaining at first floor. Modern shop front, continuous. Ogee bracket eaves cornice. Fairly steep slate roof, central chimney.

An old photograph shows the original shop front of 20 High Street. 19 - 20 High Street are one of four target buildings for refurbishment in the first year of the regeneration programme.

19 and 20 High Street.
Two houses, possibly originally with shops below; now in use as a supermarket with accommodation over. Probably mid 18th century in origin and apparently built as a pair, the left hand building refenestrated in the circa 1830s. Circa 1960s shopfront. Painted Flemish bond brick; slate roof; axial stacks with brick shafts with corbelled caps.
Plan: double depth.
Exterior: 3 storeys. Symmetrical 2:2 bay front. Deep eaves with a moulded eaves cornice on moulded brackets. Twentieth century shop front with a deep fascia extending across a passageway to the right. Number 20 has 18th century sash windows with moulded flush frames; ground floor glazed with probably original 12-pane sashes. The first floor windows also have moulded flush frames but are glazed with later 4-pane sashes. The windows of number 19 may have been the same but are now early 19th century and longer. First floor glazed with recessed 12-pane sashes; second floor with similar 3/6-pane sashes.
Interior: Ground floor gutted for shop. Features of interest may survive on the upper floors
