Name:Cross in St Edward's churchyard, Shaugh Prior

Summary

Cross, in the churchyard near south porch. An octagonal socket- stone with a square socket-hole. A length of shaft, of octagonal section, forms the coping of the wall beside the steps at the east entrance to the churchyard. It is square at one end, with stops, and has projections at the other end. Head and arms are missing.

Full description

Masson Phillips, E. N., 1937, The Ancient Stone Crosses of Devon: Part I, 305 (Article in Serial). SDV240502.

Cross, in the churchyard near south porch. Type B or C. An octagonal socket- stone with a square socket-hole. A length of shaft, of octagonal section, forms the coping of the wall beside the steps at the east entrance to the churchyard. It is square at one end, with stops, and has projections at the other end. Head and arms are missing.

The socket stone is partly buried and situated among the graves on the south side of St. Edwards Church.

This record appears to have been muddled with the cross at the eastern end of the village; near the Vicarage and the list description had been added to this record. Checked and removed from this record as this cross does not ever appear to have been listed.
