Full description

Department of Environment, 1973, Northam, 9 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV17982.

Leighbarn, Burrough Road. Eighteenth century. The only pre-19th century building on the property, rectangular, stone, now with machine tile roof. Adapted as dwelling. Formerly with old timber lintols to openings. Some former pigeon-holes remain.

18th century. The only pre-19th century building on the property, rectangular, stone, now with machine tile roof. Adapted as dwelling. Formerly with old timber lintols to openings. Some former pigeon-holes remain. Burrough House, the ancient manor house originally on this site was the home of Stephen and William Burrough, explorer and Vice-Admiral respectively, in Elizabethan times. Later the seat of the Leighs. Kingsley's probably mythical character, Amyas Leigh was supposed to have lived here. Later the home of 18th century Admiral Barton. The house was entirely rebuilt in 1868, later divided into 2 properties, Burrough House and Burrough Farm.
