Summary

One of two grass-covered cairns around 60 metres south of Brisworthy China Clay Works. Five cairns around 200 metres north-west of this pair are scheduled. This site is included in the local list of Nationally Important Dartmoor sites.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1951, SX56SE29 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV216693.

Cairn E. One of six grass grown cairns, measuring 7.6 metres in diameter.


Grinsell, L. V., 1978, Dartmoor Barrows, 157 (Article in Serial). SDV273224.

(Site visited in May 1976) Cairn 7.0 metres in diameter, 0.5 metres high, at SX55266482. Other details: 9 Wigford Down.


Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1980, SX56SE143 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV216692.

A cairn located at SX55256482, on the south-east slopes of Wigford Down at 235 metres above sea level. This cairn measures 8.0 metres in diameter and 0.6 metres high. It has a slight central depression 0.2 metres deep. The remains of a field wall, 1.7 metres wide and 0.3 metres high are visible between this and an adjacent cairn (PRN 28537). Other details: Plan.

It is difficult to achieve reasonable concordance between these cairns and those identified by Grinsell. 'E' may relate to Ordnance Survey Archaeology Card SX56SE143, which is also one of Worth's 'two tumuli' (National Monuments Record citing Ordnance Survey).

This site was considered for designation as a Scheduled Ancient Monument during the Monument Protection Programme. The programme ended before the entire list of sites was successfully scheduled so this is included on a local list of Nationally Important Sites.
