HER Number:MDV24822
Name:Streamworking at Fox Tor Girt

Summary

Post medieval streamworks extending from the head of Black Lane Valley and joining the upper Swincombe streamwork. An archaeological field survey in 1995 recorded the earthworks as measuring on average 1 metre to 1.5 metres deep and 40 metres wide at the south end. Also present are several areas of transverse and linear spoil heaps, small tin pits and two leats measuring 1.2m wide and 0.7m deep, which supplied water to the streamworks. The central area of the streamworks, comprises much deeper working, over 2 metres deep in places, and the area is dominated by a narrow, steep sided island of unworked alluvial deposits. A small openwork lies on the western edge of the working. A separate area of streamworking, west of the main stream and centred at SX 62756990, is some 3-4m deep and 50m wide, with spoil piled onto the east side, revetted in places.

SX 6290 6978 Streamwork extends off map at SX63007000, with extensive spoilheaps visible.
SX 6270 6927 Openwork has a number of trial pits running along its western edge, but appears to have no major spoilheaps.

(11/09/1995) The streamworks run from the head of the valley, called 'Black Lane' at SX 62656925 to join the upper Swincombe streamworks at SX 62757040 (Monument HOB UID 910357). The workings are on average 1 to 1.5m deep and 40m wide at the S end. There are several areas of transverse spoil heaps, particularly around the tinners building SX 66 NW 151. West of this building are several small tin pits and two dry leat channels. The latter, on average 1.2m wide and 0.7m deep, supplied water to the streamworks.
In the central part of the streamworks, around SX 62756965, the working is much deeper, over 2m in places, and the area is dominated by a narrow, steep sided island of unworked alluvial deposits. Several small tin pits and a small openwork lie on the western edge of the working, centred at SX 62646961. To the northeast of this, in the area around the tinners buildings (Monument HOB UID 1064063 and 1064068), the most conspicuous feature of the streamworks are numerous transverse and linear spoil heaps, many of which are revetted. These are formed of much very small material, suggesting that the area has been reworked.
A separate area of streamworking, west of the main stream and centred at SX 62756990, is some 3-4m deep and 50m wide, with spoil piled onto the east side, revetted in places.
