The remains of a ridge and furrow field system are visible on air photos (p1) along the north bank of the river Trushel. They are sited within an area described as 'rough ground': rough grazing ground, heathland or moorland, for Devon’s Historic Landscape Characterisation. The Devon HER describes 'traces of early cultivation spread over many fields, similar to ridge and furrow' in this area. The remains have been digitally plotted as part of the National Mapping Programme.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2017-2018, Backlog recording of the Winkleigh National Mapping Programme Survey (Personal Comment). SDV360588.

The ridge and furrow mentioned elsewhere within this record possibly refers to the 19th-20th century practice involving the mechanical ploughing of ground for the improvement of drainage and or areas of rough ground. This monument record has accordingly been indexed as narrow ridge and furrow.
