Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Leat depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map (approximately 1880s in date) but not named.

Royal Air Force, 1946, RAF/CPE/UK/1890, 4351 (Aerial Photograph). SDV169268.

National Monuments Record, 1977, NMR SX5668/2, 131 (Aerial Photograph). SDV225207.

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

Section of the leat running between 875 and 975 foot contour on south slope of Yellowmead Down. Western termination at SX55996832 (?). Turns south at east Yellowmead Down SX57356827. Travels south to Whittenknowles rocks along 1000 foot contour.

Fletcher, M. + Newman, P. + Probert, S., 1999, Drizzlecombe, Eylesbarrow, Ditsworthy and Hartor areas in the Plym Valley, West Devon (Report - Survey). SDV346268.

(14/07/1999) A maintained leat which draws water from the Drizzlecombe Brook at SX59156742 supplies Ditsworthy Warren House (SX5840662) and also properties in the Sheepstor area to the north-west.
Water for this leat may once have come from the diverted leat (SX66NW161) which emptied into the abandoned stream workings in Drizzlecombe at SX59166742. There are indications of the remains of a weir that may once have ponded or controlled the waterflow into the leat at SX59156742. Near Whittenknowles there are a number of dry channel courses and at SX58576693 the leat bifurcates - one branch runs south to the Warren House and the second north to the Sheepstor area.

Whitbourn, A., 2001, An Archaeological Investigation into features comprising, and associated with, Ditsworthy Warren, 31-33, Photographs 22, Diagram 4 (Report - Assessment). SDV360381.

The leat which flows south towards Ditsworthy Warren House has been diverted via a channel under the track into the reservoir to the north-west of the house. A further diversion flows west towards the River Plym.

Newman, P. + Probert, S., 2005, Ringmoor Training Area: Monument Baseline Condition Survey (Report - Survey). SDV363484.

(10/03/2005) This feature remains largely as described in 1999 though the flow has apparently been reduced to a trickle and the sides of the channel are becoming overgrown.

Dartmoor Trust and Dartmoor National Park Authority, 2010, Dartmoor Trust Leats Project 2009-2010 (Report - Survey). SDV347530.

Longstone Leat, Sheepstor surveyed and recorded flowing between SX591674 - SX562680 and to SX 584663. (Drizzle Combe Brook - Burrator Reservoir and Ditsworthy Warren Hous). Take-off is a rough boulder 'sluice', difficult to control flow. Some sections prone to silting. Some culverts, fords and bridges cause problems as does dam building by the public. Mostly on common land. Sheepstor Commoners undertake maintenance. Other details: T:\Dartmoor Leats Survey / Q:\MAPDATA\HISTORIC\LeatsProject.

Ordnance Survey, 2011, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV346129.
