Summary

A horseshoe shaped quarry pit, with sloping sides, extends for 46 metres by 24 metres. The hollow cuts into the slope and is open at the north-east end. Flat-topped spoil dumps up to 25 metres long are located a few metres to the east. Appears to be early 20th century, as the late 19th century historic map depicts rifle range targets here.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The late 19th century historic map shows this was the site of target butts for a rifle range, so presumably the quarry / pit post-dated this use.

A disused quarry on Welstor Common. A horseshoe shaped quarry pit, with sloping sides, extends for 46 metres by 24 metres. The hollow cuts into the slope and is open at the north-east end. Flat-topped spoil dumps up to 25 metres long are located a few metres to the east. Date not known but the quarry was depicted in a less developed form on the Ordnance Survey 2nd Edition 25 inch map of 1905.
Condition is stable, SX73907 73152.
