Four pits are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1951 on the south-east facing slopes of Headon Down. Roughly circular, two measure circa 6 to 8m in diameter. The remaining two measure 4 to 5m in diameter.
The earthworks are interpreted as possibly the remains prospecting pits of post-medieval to 19th century date.
The larger two appear to have been infilled and partly levelled on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2002, by modern quarrying activity encroaching from the west, but can be identified as subtle earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
However, only one of the smaller can be identified as an earthwork on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2018, at circa SX58785975.
