An oval pit circa 7m across flanked by linear banks or mounds is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as an earthwork on the west-facing slopes overlooking the Tory Brook, west of Bottle Hill, Sparkwell. Immediately to the north-west of the pit a roughly triangular mound up to circa 23m across is visible as an earthwork.
The visible earthworks closely correspond with a shaft and mound depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition 25inch map.
The earthworks are probably the remains of Hitchins shaft, as recorded by the above authority, and an associated spoil heap, part of Bottle Hill Mine
The earthworks remain clearly identifiable on digital visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
