Linear and curvilinear banks and ditches are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs 1946 onwards on the south-east facing slopes at Baccamore Waste on the southern edge of Headon Down.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey and but can be interpreted as being in keeping with the character of the field pattern south of the Down.
They are interpreted as evidence of piecemeal enclosure of probable medieval to post-medieval date defining a small field system on the southern edge of Headon Down, formerly Headon Common, that was cleared prior to the 1840s. No evidence of relict boundaries within the extant field pattern were identified.
The relict boundaries are cut in several places by later paths and tracks, some of which are depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map of circa 1880. Drains depicted on the current Ordnance Survey MasterMap adjacent to two of the boundaries probably originated as boundary ditches.
Many of the banks remain visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
