HER Number:MDV25836
Name:Fields and enclosures on Mountsland Common

Summary

A series of medieval and later enclosures on Mountsland Common. Elements and orientation of the Rippon Tor parallel reave system can be seen to be underpinning the layout of the fields, but their surviving character, of robust earth bank, some with external ditches is certainly much later. Also, some elements appear to have been added piecemeal rather than fitting any scheme. A high proportion of the fields have clear evidence of ridge and furrow.

Field system, post-prehistoric in appearance but with strong elements of a parallel reave system particularly around SX75427410 where the banks or reaves are aligned north-west by south-east and show association with neighbouring parallel reave systems. There is ridge and furrow at SX75307425 and SX75557412. The 1946 Royal Air Force photos suggest that this area had not been in use for at least several decades. The system is bounded by streamworks at SX75197400 and SX75557430.
