Tin openwork and mine shafts 850m east of Rippon Tor
A tin openwork of probable post-medieval date, oriented approximately north to south, is up to 30 metres wide and 6 metres deep. Evidence of additional working in an approximately east - west direction is found at the southern end in the form of a cutting on the east side. Shallow pits with small crescentic spoil heaps extend down the eastern slope of the hill suggesting further prospecting. A narrow gully on a similar alignment to the pits probably represents additional prospecting activity. South of the openwork an impressive reservoir, now dry, comprising an earthwork hollow and linear bank of 60 metres long, stored water to supply the workings. Faint earthwork leats survive to the south and west, which once diverted water from sources within the locale, including a small spring to the west and a second artificial reservoir to the south at the summit of the hill (MDV103779).
In the 19th century, a shaft was sunk within the south end of the openwork at SX 75532 75530. This was probably Western Shaft as depicted on the abandoned mine plan for Bagtor Mine (DRO R54b). Although blocked, its position is marked by a circular hollow. Hauling within this shaft was achieved using a horse whim, the remains of which survive at SX 75570 75513, comprising a level, circular platform cut into the slope of the hill. Condition is stable.
