Swete, R. J. (Revd), 1792-1801, 564M 'Picturesque Sketches of Devon' by Reverend John Swete, 91 (Record Office Collection). SDV337942.

Reference to ancient chapel converted into a barn.

Lysons, D. + Lysons, S., 1822, Magna Britannica, 174 (Monograph). SDV323771.

Lysons records that the chapel had been converted into a cowhouse by 1822.

Marked as a barn on tithe map of 1844. Surrounded by 'Chapel' field names.

Destroyed for some time now as only vague suggestions of footings are visible on the surface, and site is partly covered by brambles.

Site of chapel. Chapel field are the remaind of a chantry chapel, converted into a cowhouse. An ancient chapel converted into a barn was no longer visible in 1961.

Site visited on 20th April 1987. A small enclosure visible in the field edge in stable condition. Some wall footings still visible, and a small amount of building debris.

Site visited on 14th October 2010. No structural remains but platform with mature oaks surrounded by eroding stone-faced banks. These are to be maintained and re-fenced under Higher Level Stewardship agreement and the internal scrub is to be controlled. Other details: Photographs in HER.

Chapel Field. No trace of the chapel remains but it is thought to have been medieval in date; serving the original village of Dunterton, known then as 'Dondritone'. The chapel (which is close to the parish church) may have been a donation from a local landowner. No documentary evidence for the chapel.
