HER Number:MDV27231
Name:Remains of an enclosure on the south slope of Lakehead Hill, Dartmoor Forest

Summary

The fragmentary remains of the walling on the east and south side, consisting of a low turf bank approximately 1 metre wide by 0.4 metres high, suggest a possible sub-rectangular enclosure. However, the wall running north-west by south-east defining the forest edge has a more recent appearance and could simply be a result of clearance during forestry operations.

An enclosure with a possible hut circle is visible at SX 644 773 on the air photograph.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1979, SX67NW111 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV221661.

(14/11/1979) SX 64397732. On the south slope of Lakehead Hill at 407m OD in scrub and rough grass are the remains of a probable prehistoric field of irregular shape measuring 66m by 86m. It is visible on the north-east as a fragmentary bank of rubble 1.0m wide and 0.3m high, and to the south-west as a crop mark. Other crop marks to the south and east suggest that a field system may be concealed beneath the peaty, ground in that area. Plotted at approximately 1:2500 from air photographs for Archaeological Officer Records only.

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

Agglomerated enclosure appearing as a vegetation mark mostly within woodland, but visible on the Royal Air Force 1946 aerial photograph.

Partly shown on the map overlay from the project, but not described.

Lakehead Hill south settlement with one associated hut circle.

(22/11/1993) SX 6440 7722. The poorly defined remains of an enclosure are located on the southern slope of Lakehead Hill. The fragmentary remains of the walling on the east and south side, consisting of a low turf bank approximately 1m wide by 0.4m high, suggest a possible sub-rectangular enclosure. However, the wall running north-west by south-east defining the forest edge has a more recent appearance and could simply be a result of clearance during forestry operations.
These remains probably represent the only visible evidence of a much larger system of enclosure walls. Aerial photography (1985 Aerial photograph project) has indicated that further sections of walling may survive within forested areas currently too dense for ground investigation at SX 6406 7749 and SX 6448 7732.

Gerrard, S., 1993-2010, Monument Protection Programme Alternative Action Report (Report - non-specific). SDV145710.

(09/07/1997) Considered under the Monument Protection Programme, but not recommended for scheduling. A single boundary bank leading through this area was identified. It may have formed part of a larger field system which survives within forestry. Despite any extensive search the remainder of the field system could not be located. The condition of the part surviving within the large forestry clearance is good.

English Heritage, 2005-2008, Prehistoric Survey Information (Cartographic). SDV345521.

Part of enclosure shown on survey.
