Three abandoned millstones on Rippon Tor, one of which, not far from cross (MDV7464), is only partly cut.

Rippon Tor. Three unfinished millstones
Millstone 30 metres north-west of summit where the reave meets a rock outcrop. Sides only part worked, top rough with grooves crosswise approximately 10 centimetres deep. Diameter 1.4 metres, height 0.2 metres (where worked) (Small sketch of stone included).

Site visit 1st April 1999. Millstone roughout 90 metres west of Rippon Tor at SX74597557. 1.5 metre diameter stone measuring 0.25 metres thick. Southern half of upper face has been worked flat as has part of the north, the remaining part does not appear to have been worked at all.

One of three earthfast abandoned millstones which lie together with a carved cross on the southern edge of the outcrop. The millstones were all abandoned prior to completion for some reason,perhaps due to a defective stone or defective workmanship. Date unknown but could be anytime between the medieval period and the 19th century and each artefact may well be of a different date.
