Des=johnston,r. +wickstead,h. +bruck,j. /shovel down project: summary report 2003/(2003)/in pf. Four slot trenches were excavated in 2003 across intersections between the medieval leat and the prehistoric reaves. 'southill leat' was a c10km water course serving southill tin stamping mill first documented in court rools between 1491 and 1505. The leat consists of a linear channel with a shallow dished profile. Where the channel had been excavated through a prehistoric boundary the cut was narrower and the stone lined with the removed stones piled up on the downhill side of the leat. The variations in the fill indicated several periods of use as a watercourse. The leat is shown running north from sx65208535 and following the contours via sx68ne/293 to sx65998605. The excavated slot trenches were located on shovel down at sx65238575, sx65238581, sx65308593 and sx65858615 (johnston et al).
