1. London Inn on site of Hawley's Hall.
2. The great ruins of Hawley's Hall, Hardness are mentioned by Leland.
3. John Hawley, a Dartmouth merchant and mayor of the town around 1388 could have been the model Chaucer used for the shipman in the Canterbury Tales (citing Saunders and Smith).

Ravenhill, M. R. + Rowe, M. M., 2000, Early Devon Maps, Map 18 (Monograph). SDV357430.

Hawley Hall is shown on N. Townsend's map of Dartmouth drawn in 1619 (1620) in connection with the trial and verdict against John Roope. John Hawley was a significant Dartmouth merchant in the 14th century and it is possible that Chaucer's shipman in his Canterbury Tales was based on him.
