Almshouse for seamen or their widows was founded in Dartmouth in 1671 by John Lovering. It was further endowed by his son in 1685, but there were no funds available for its rebuilding after a fire in 1794 (citing Lysons).

An almshouse founded by Mr Street received its only endowment from Richard Kelly. Now called the Widow's Houses, inhabited by eight or ten poor widows, usually of seamen (citing lysons).

Lovering's Houses are still so-called and are on the north side South Ford Road near the junction with Crowther's Hill.
