Full description
FMG ON AP, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV12426.
In the south west corner of the north whilborough field system, an apparent oval earthwork enclosure recorded from the air in march 1986 by f. M. Griffith. The enclosure measures roughly 80m by 50m and the field system does not, from the photograph, appear to continue through it. The western edge is still preserved in the modern field boundary, bordering a track which curves round the enclosure (fmg on ap).

Vis=28/5/1986 (griffith + luxton) the enclosure appears to be genuine. The southern part is much slighter than the rest but perceptible on the ground. The hedge does indeed follow the boundary of the enclosure, and the hedgebank becomes most massive, broader, and gentler in profile on the line of the enclosure (griffith).

A slight curvilinear earthwork bank, circa 5m wide, which possibly defines the northern edge of a prehistoric or Romano-British oval enclosure, circa 100m long by 55m wide, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken from 1950 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The south edge of the enclosure is clearly fossilised by an extant field boundary and track. Also visible as earthworks in this location and contiguous with this enclosure are a series of linear and curvilinear banks of an associated prehistoric or Romano-British field system (MDV14908).
