Earthworks of mounds and cuttings are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, along the western side of the River Plym. The earthworks correspond with land parcel 407 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, which is recorded as ‘Waste’ with a cultivation type of coppice on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. The extent of the earthworks is defined by irregularly shaped and steep sided cuttings which enclose an area of circa 0.66 hectares, within which are several irregularly shaped mounds and additional pits. Their character and form support the interpretation they represent the cuttings, extractive pits and associated spoil heaps of a possible medieval or post-medieval alluvial tin streamworks which had passed out of use by the mid-19th century by which time the area had been given over to woodland. Water used in the washing and processing of the tin-ore was probably sourced from the River Plym, via a series of leats. The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to dense tree cover.
