Full description

Anon, 1964, Excavation of a Dartmoor hut Scadbrook, Ugborough Moor (Article in Serial). SDV145898.

Excavation of a Dartmoor hut, Scadbrook, Ugborough Moor.
Hut, one of several forming an enclosed group near Scadbrook, was partly excavated. Internal diameter of hut 6 metres, walls 1-2 metres wide. Outside the hut a test pit was dug and produced a quantity of charcoal, scraps of pottery, an oval quartzite pebble with high gloss due to utilization, two granite grinding stones with smooth flat faces, one large enough to be a saddle quern.

Gaskell-Brown, C. + Hankin, C., 1974 -1978, Ugborough Parish Checklist, Page 93/215 (PF, IDOX) (Worksheet). SDV161354.

Scad Brook, Glazebrook, near Owley Gate, elevation 244 metres. In the higher part of the enclosure (SX65NE/23) on the left bank of the Scad Brook, near the enclosure wall there is a large hut circle which shows signs of a recent cleaning up. The walls have been cleaned on the inner side and the interior of the hut has been cleaned. The doorway in the south is 0.56 metres wide, with one jamb standing 1.18 metres high. The other jamb stands, but not so high. The floor of the doorway is paved. Internal diameter 6.1 metres. Wall height 0.76 metres (undated).

Masson Phillips, E. N., 1982, Archaeological Notes III. The Excavation of a Dartmoor Hut, 57-62, figs 1-7 (Article in Serial). SDV176912.

Hut at SX6665 6001 excavated during three summers (1964-66) by E. N. Masson Phillips and students at the Slapton Ley Field Studies Centre.
Internal diameter of the hut is 19 feet, 8 inches (6.0 metres) with walls 5 feet 6 inches (1.7 metres) to 6 feet (1.8 metres) thick. Entrance to south-east. Wall of double skin, rubble filled construction. Entrance 'paved' with rubble and with two upright side-stones, 4 foot 1 inch (1.25 metres) and 3 foot 1 inch (0.95 metres) in height and 1 foot 11 inches (0.33 metres) apart.
A large central post hole and six radial post holes suggests roof was supported by six ribs. Hearth with charcoal and 'pot boilers'. Pottery consisted of thick reddish ware with granite and quartz grit, and a thinner darker ware resembling late Bronze Age Dean Moor pottery. Two saddle quern base stones were found; one placed in the centre post-hole, apparently reused as a footing for the centre post. Three pieces of broken granite with artificially smoothed faced (thought to be grinding stones) were also found.

Depicted on the modern mapping, which matches the 2010 and 2015 aerial photography of the site, so is thought to be fairly accurate.
