Extant boundaries depicted on historic mapping (citing 1982 Ordnance Survey 1:10000 map sheets).
The uncompleted boundary works of this 19th century enclosure contain approximately 150 hectares of rough moorland pasture flanking the West Dart River and upper reaches of the Cherry Brook. The works mainly consist of turf banks up to 3.0 metres wide and 1.4 metres high flanked by quarry ditches with sections of drystone walls visible east of Rough Tor and south-east of Crow Tor. The boundaries are obviously incomplete with a 600 metres gap immediately south of Rough Tor and 100 metres missing immediately south-west of Lower White Tor.
It is likely that the enclosure was the subject of a grant by the Duchy of Cornwall in the early years of the 19th century possibly to a Mr Paterson (citing Hemery 1983, 423). Brown's House and its associated enclosures (SX 67 NW 88) were probably designed to form the core of this small estate (citing Probert, S. A. J., 7/09/1994, Royal Commission on the Historic Monuments in England Field Investigation).
