Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Irregularly shaped pits and mounds are visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as earthworks up to circa 130m across, on the north-east edge of Teignmouth Golf Club, Bishopsteignton. The visible earthworks partly correspond with ‘Old Quarries’ depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25in First Edition map, and more closely match ‘Gravel Pits’ and ‘Old Gravel Pits’ depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25in Second Edition map.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as former extractive pits, probably gravel pits and spoil heaps, of probable 19th century origin, that passed out of use in the late 19th century and returned to use into the early to mid-20th century.
The pits remain visible within Teignmouth Golf Club on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2018, some as an earthwork under grass incorporated into the course, others used to house storage facilities.
The pits were not transcribed as part of the survey.

Ordnance Survey, 2019, MasterMap 2019 (Cartographic). SDV362729.

Irregularly shaped pits are schematically depicted.
