Full description

Southcombe is shown on the Tithe Map, Field number 651 on the apportionment; 'house, yard etc.'. House lies to the north of the farm, aligned east-west.

Beeson, M. M. R. + Masterman, M. C. H., 1979, An Archaeological Survey of Enclosed Land in Widecombe-In-The-Moor Parish, Vol IV 758 (Report - Survey). SDV337078.

(14/8/1979) The house is based on an original longhouse pattern. The exterior is slate hung. The date on the porch reads 1741. There is a central passage with a hearth, and a staircase where the old spiral staircase would have been. Due to the damp, slate tunnels in the walls and little canals in the floors were constructed. The main porch and wash house were built about 1843 or possibly afterwards. Two outside buildings have disappeared. There are two leats in front of the house. A very shallow circular granite trough is also there. (Sketch on worksheet).
