A church was built by the monks of Buckfast Abbey at a very early date on the present site. When first built it was a small church in the Cistercian style, cruciform with a chancel, two trancepts and a nave. There is little if anything left of the old structure. The pillars which support the tower seem to be older than the tower itself, and probably date back to the 11th or 12th century. The church was enlarged and reconsecrated in 1414.

Kingsbridge was in the Parish of Churchstow, both manors belonged to Buckfast Abbey as early as 1333, but how it became possessed of them is not clear. It seems that a chapel of ease was erected at Kingsbridge without rights of sepulture. In 1410 a deed gave a tenement and garden to the Chapel of St Edmund, Kingsbridge when a cemetery had apparently been provided but not used. The importance of Kingsbridge led to the consecration of a church for the town in 1414.
