Full description

Department of Environment, Bere Ferrers (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV216169.

Farm building may originally have been a shippon. Circa early-mid 19th century. Rubble walls. Has brick chimney shaft. Shippon was probably on ground floor but all evidence has disappeared, there is now one large room and one smaller room on ground floor. Two storeys. Granary was probably situated on the first floor. Asymmetrical front with stone steps. Other details: Provisional list..

English Heritage, 1979, Bere Ferrers, LBS No 92600 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV323412.

Farm building attached to north-west end of Rumleigh Farmhouse.

Ratcliffe, D., 2021, Rumleigh Farm, Bere Alston, PL20 7HN: Descriptive Buildings Record, Heritage Impact Assessment, 4.22; Fig 11 (Report - Assessment). SDV365980.

The barn, known as “Yellowhammer” is of probable 19th century date, and was converted to domestic use in the 1980s. The elevation described by the list description may be that to the north, as it is here that the chimney stack described is found. Openings to the south east (facing the yard) do not share the brick dressings found on the ground floor openings to the north west and do not illustrate agricultural uses. The building’s agricultural character and authenticity has been harmed as a result. The building’s roof is now wholly covered by sized natural slate. The building has been extended, probably in blockwork to its northern end. Whilst this work is not described in the list description it does appear to be illustrated on maps from 1952 onwards and is considered contemporary with and part of the link to the house.
