Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Recorded as Coombe Cottage on the Abbotsham Tithe Apportionment. Described as a house and court (Plot 820).

Coombe Cottage is an ancient cottage much altered. There is part of a courtyard wall with 2 arched entrances. The house has some thick walls, and deep cupboards but most of the floor levels have been altered, and the fenestration is modern. Listed as Grade III, awaiting regrading.

Known as Combe Cot, the present owners have renamed it Wakewells. 'R. A. Shute, bought Cumbe W-' remainder was broken off, was found under the staircase. Slate roof. Dripstones. Two room and cross passage plan. Alterations have taken place. In the courtyard there is a well in the north west corner covered over with pump fixed against the north wall of the house. Remains of bread oven. Doors and frames are modern. Two end chimney stacks and one large double stone stack on north wall. The original dairy room is now used as a kitchen. Several original beams.
